货到尼日利亚港口被卡了?先看看你的SONCAP证书是不是少了这一步

Factory friends doing business in the Nigerian market have almost certainly heard of SONCAP. Simply put, this is the mandatory customs clearance certification run by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and it governs whether products can enter Nigeria. Without this certificate, goods get stuck at the port directly, customs clearance cannot be completed, demurrage fees pile up day by day, and your customer can't deliver either. It is divided into two steps: first do product certification (called PC), and after obtaining the certificate, apply for customs clearance certification (called SC) for each shipment. Many people think getting one certificate is the end of it, only to find themselves dumbfounded when the first shipment goes out and the second one comes along.

So what products require it? The scope is very broad—electronics and electrical appliances, toys, building materials, auto parts, chemical products, textiles, food-contact materials—none of these can escape it. Basically, apart from a small number of exemptions, most consumer goods and industrial products are on the controlled list. Send me an HS code and I can check it for you fastest.

Let me cover the three most common pitfalls. First, using a PC certificate as an SC. PC is product registration, generally valid for one year, but before each shipment goes out you still have to apply separately for an SC; without an SC it still can't clear customs. Second, non-compliant test reports. SON recognizes reports issued by qualified laboratories, and the standards must match Nigeria's; if you bring a domestic standard or an expired report, it will be rejected outright. Third, product markings and instruction manuals not done in English or not meeting local requirements—if they're flagged during inspection, the time wasted redoing labels is longer than the certification itself.

On timelines, if documents are complete and testing goes smoothly, PC takes about two to three weeks, and SC application for each shipment takes about three to five working days. But the premise is that your test reports are fine and product labels are compliant. If reports need to be redone or you hit an inspection queue, the time gets pushed back. So don't wait until the goods are about to ship before thinking about it—get the PC a month in advance, and then SC for each subsequent shipment will go smoothly. If you're unsure about a specific product, send me the product name and HS code, and I'll check it against the controlled list for you.
